Wander downhill through the churchyard of the Old First Church in Old Bennington VT, just downhill from the Bennington Battle Monument and just uphill from the Bennington Museum. Turn right at the first side path, then left at the next, and eventually on the right you'll see several large gray rectangular granite monuments laid on the earth. One bears a familiar name—the name of America's most beloved New England poet. Robert Lee Frost, it reads, Mar. 26, 1874—Jan. 29, 1963. I had a lover's quarrel with the world. Though born in San Francisco (of New England stock), he moved to New England at the age of 10; and though he moved to England (1912) to pursue his literary ambitions, Robert Frost could only have been a New Englander. He tried to be a farmer but, by his own admission, had little success. As a poet of natural beauty, wonder, and the understated, he was an all-time master.
