Settled before the Revolution, Manchester was once a summer resort on the order of Massachusetts' lofty Berkshire Hills, with a wide main street and handsome houses that retain the charm of the early Federal period. |

As the county seat of Bennington County, Manchester, Vermont was an important place long before Mt Equinox (3,800 feet/1158 meters), to the west, drew crowds of hikers and skiers. Robert Todd Lincoln, son of President Abraham Lincoln, built his grand estate of Hildene here. You can visit it. The sprawling Equinox Hotel, right in the center of town, was a posh 19th-century resort, then fell on hard times, but has now been rehabilitated to better than its former glory. In the modern town of Manchester Center, just a few miles north along US Route 7, all is bustle and activity, with traffic lights, outlet stores, boutiques, supermarkets and restaurants. In winter, you ski: Bromley, Mount Snow, Magic Mountain, Stratton Mountain, and numerous ski-touring centers are located within a few miles of Manchester Center. Right in Manchester is the ski-touring center at Hildene. In summer, you can play golf, swim, hike, or ride a bike.
