North Conway has taken well to its role of mountain town, and the people talk hearty and look healthy. The most prominent landmark in North Conway is the old railroad station, refurbished to host the Conway Scenic Railroad. You'll see it on the west side of the White Mountain Highway (the town's main north-south street) just across the town green. The Mount Cranmore ski area is just on the northeastern outskirts of the town. Other ski areas are nearby. Perhaps the character and charm of North Conway is best exhibited by the town library building on Main Street not far from the railroad station: Although small, it's built of massive granite blocks and has a slate roof which will last forever. North Conway is not a particularly large town, although the mile or two of motels and eateries along NH 16 south of town do seem to extend the boundaries. But basically one can walk to almost anything except this southern extension by parking downtown, somewhere near the antique railroad station in the center. Some of the businesses are old-time mom-and-pop affairs, but a lot of shops have been citified to cater to the hiking and ski trades. Still, the town has not been "taken over" by city people. |

North Conway's railroad station now serves as the base for the Conway Scenic Railroad excursion trains.
