Lake Sunapee, New Hampshire

A pretty lake with a beach, a state park and a winter ski area.

Lake Sunapee is a pleasant regional vacation spot in southwestern New Hampshire, not very far from the town of Hanover, which is home to Dartmouth College.

Besides summer sports such as swimming, boating, and canoeing, the area around Lake Sunapee has its own small ski area in Mount Sunapee State Park.

On a trip to Vermont or north to Hanover for a visit to Dartmouth, the shores of Lake Sunapee are a fine place to stop for a night or even a week.

Of the towns around the lake, Sunapee (sometimes called Sunapee Harbor) on the western shore is the nicest, with a good collection of inns, motels, and resorts.

Although in its early days Sunapee held a tannery, gristmill, and several shops for woodworking industries, it now makes its living from summer visitors and winter skiers.

The town of Mount Sunapee, on the southwestern shore, is not really a town at all, regardless of what it may say on your road map. The intersection of NH Routes 103 and 103B, with a motel and the state park and state beach entrance, is the "town." Don't plan to get gas there!
