Marblehead MA Transportation

You can get to Salem by train, and to Marblehead by train and bus, or bicycle, or car.

Marblehead is 4 miles (6.5 km) southeast of Salem.

Car
The fastest way from Boston to Marblehead is the least direct: take I-93 north to I-95 north (MA Route 128 east), and take the exit marked for MA Route 114 and Salem.

A more direct route, via US 1, is not much faster.

The most direct route, via MA Route 1A, is slowest because it passes through many towns (and many traffic signals) along the way. If you do follow MA Route 1A north from Boston, turn onto MA Route 129 in Swampscott and follow this route right into Old Town, Marblehead.

Note that street and highway signage on the North Shore are particularly bad. Routes are filled with turns, and signs are confusing or missing. Don't be afraid to stop and ask directions.

Train & Bus
MBTA Commuter Rail trains from Boston stop at Salem, from where you can take a taxi to Marblehead.

You may also transfer to a bus at Lynn, south of Salem. MBTA buses 441 and 442 run from Lynn's Central Square to Marblehead about every half hour during rush hours, every hour other times, but note that only bus 442 runs in the evening and on Sunday. The trip between Lynn and Marblehead takes about 25 minutes.
