The most comfortable and scenic way to travel between Boston MA, the New Hampshire coast, Maine's southern coast, Portland, Freeport and Brunswick ME.

Amtrak's Downeaster train runs five times daily between Boston MA and Portland ME via Woburn and Haverhill MA; Exeter, Durham and Dover NH; Wells, Saco and Old Orchard Beach ME (map).

Two of the daily trains continue past Portland to Freeport ME, home of L L Bean, and Brunswick (for Bowdoin College).

Exeter NH is nearest to Hampton Beach NH; alight at Durham or Dover for Portsmouth NH (or take Amtrak's Thruway Bus from Boston's South Station direct to Portsmouth NH.)

Although the train goes right through the Kennebunks, it doesn't stop. The nearest station stops are in Wells and Saco ME.

The journey between Boston and Portland takes 2.5 hours, as compared to 2 hours by intercity bus.

However, the train hauls a Snack Car, offers Wifi, is wheelchair accessible, and on a train you can get up and walk around.

The train also takes a more scenic route than the highway for much of its journey.
