Amtrak's Downeaster train runs several times daily between Boston MA and Portland ME via Woburn and Haverhill MA; Durham and Dover NH; Wells, Saco and Old Orchard Beach ME (map).

Exeter NH is nearest to Hampton Beach NH; alight at Durham or Dover for Portsmouth NH.

Although the train goes right through the Kennebunks, it doesn't stop. The nearest station stops are in Wells and Saco ME.

The journey takes 2-1/2 hours, as compared to 2 hours by intercity bus.

However, the train hauls a Snack Car, and on a train you can get up and walk around.

The train also takes a more scenic route than the highway for much of its journey.
