New England has hundreds of covered bridges, well preserved, restored, and even brand-new. The one below is at Ashuelot, New Hampshire. (The one in the small photo to the right is in Woodstock, Vermont.) Why the roof? For sheltering traveling people and farm animals in a storm, and to protect the bridge's construction. Snow and ice don't pile up on the road surface in a covered bridge! Covered bridges last far longer than open bridges. |
