A sure sign of spring in Concord MA is the appearance of this colorful plant (Symplocarpus foetidus) which takes its name from the rotten smell that greets your nostrils if you bruise or break it. These deep-red leaves grow in wet areas, especially near streams, ponds, marshes, and wet woods, of which Concord has many. They will grow and widen and turn green, and if you step on them, you'll smell it! |
