Walden Pond, Concord MA |
|
|
One of thousands of ponds and lakes scooped from the New England countryside by glaciers, Walden Pond in Concord MA is more famous than all the rest. Ralph Waldo Emerson owned woodland around it, and walked here several times each week to swim, gaze, contemplate and marvel in the wonders of nature. Louisa May Alcott, her sisters and the Emerson children came to swim, boat and play games. Henry David Thoreau came, built a small "house" on Emerson's land, and "lived deliberately" on Walden's shores for "two years and two months." (See also the Walden in Winter Photo Gallery.) |
