"Smuggs," as it is called affectionately by those who come here often, was designed with families in mind. Most accommodations are condominiums, perfect for families or small groups. 78 trails descend the vertical drop of 2610 feet (796 meters), served by 8 lifts. Lots of programs for beginning skiers, young skiers and non-skiers are available, but this does not detrace from the beautiful and challenging slopes on Madonna Mountain. As you can see from the photo to the right, the views are spectacular—all the way to Canada on a clear day. Although Smuggler's Notch Ski Resort is just a few miles north of Stowe VT, the road through Smuggler's Notch is not open in winter (map). You must drive around the mountains to reach Smuggler's Notch Ski Resort on the north side of the notch at Jeffersonville. Plan your travel time accordingly. Smugglers'
