Mount Jefferson Ski Area in Lee, Maine, 60 miles (97 km) northeast of Bangor (map), is a nice, small, family-owned and -operated ski area that's great for first-time and beginning skiers. With a vertical drop of 432 feet (132 meters), 12 trails (3 green, 6 blue, 3 black), a 600-foot handle tow and two 2000-foot T-bars, it's great for beginners. The annual snowfall of 110 inches (2.79 meters) is supplemented with 40% snowmaking capability. Ski and snowboard lessons and rentals are available, and the snack bar refills you after a few runs.
