Powder Ridge Ski Area in Middlefield, Connecticut, just east of Meriden, opened in 1959 and for decades was the place where many Connecticut residents learned to ski. It closed in 2007 because of financial troubles. Several attempts have been made to re-open it, in 2008 and 2011. As of March, 2012, its future was still undecided, but it was not open for skiing.
