Ferries, leaving from the King Street Dock in Burlington (map), operate from late May through mid-October, leaving each terminus at about 1-hour intervals from 8 or 9:15 am to 7:30 or 8:30 pm, a bit more frequently in summer, with 11 to 13 trips a day in each direction.
You can take your car across if you're going somewhere beyond Port Kent. The trip, a marvelous way to get to know Lake Champlain, takes about one hour each way. The Burlington—Port Kent ferry doesn't run in winter, but ferries between Charlotte VT and Essex NY operate from mid-April through January 2, and those between Grand Isle VT and Plattsburgh NY operate year round, 24 hours a day.
