The Fan House, Barnard, Vermont

A cosmopolitan writer welcomes guests to her historic 1830s home in the placid, unspoiled village of Barnard, Vermont, only a short drive north of Woodstock.

Wooden fans over the doors and windows give The Fan House in Barnard its name, but the real charm in this 1830s farmhouse comes from its owner.

Sara Widness is a well-traveled writer, reporter, art and music lover, and occasional poet. She brings a pleasant sophistication to this small Vermont village, and to the ambience and decor of the Fan House.

Only three guest rooms here, so you really will be in a country refuge. All have private bath, one has a king bed, two have queen-size beds. One room can be expanded to a family suite.

Everything is high quality: the linens, the oversize bath towels, the Bulgari bath amenities. There's a working fireplace in one room, and quality and tranquillity in all three.

Check the Fan House website for current room rates.
