Waybury Inn, Rte. 125, East Middlebury, VT 05740 (tel 802-388-4015) has 14 cozy, quaint rooms refurbished in period style. The inn's dining room serves dinner and Sunday brunch at moderate prices. There's also a fully-licensed tavern. The Middlebury Inn & Motel, 20 Court House Square, Middlebury, VT 05753 (tel 802-388-4961, or toll free 800-842-4666) dominates the town square even more than the red-brick courthouse just up the hill from it. The 65 guest rooms are in several locations: 45 in the inn itself, 5 in the Hubbard House attached to the inn, 5 in the Victorian-style Porter Mansion, and 10 in a modern motel annex. Price is determined by the size and location (and thus the views) of the room. The inn has its own dining room, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Started as the Vermont Hotel in 1827, was renovated as the Addison House, and finally became the Middlebury Inn. It has always been Middlebury's prime place to stay. Excellent, friendly service, good tavern bar, formal dining room, Open Book Cafe in part of the spacious main lobby/salon, long verandah overlooking the town green for summer dining, very comfy guest rooms in a variety of styles with four-poster beds and decor harking back to the geat days of the Addison. Relax in the lobby, cafe or restaurant and you're likely to hear strange languages and discussions of history—that's because of the many visiting professors. Middlebury College has famous, exmansive foreign language dept. When crowds of parents swell the town for graduation, or alums return for homecoming, the town's lodging places are always filled. The "Homeowners Listing" is a very useful service.
