The Equinox saw its heyday in Victorian times, with four presidents as guests over the years. (It was almost five: Lincoln had reservations for 1865, but was assassinated.)

As the inn's fame and clientele grew, wings and additions were added to the original building, making at last a vast, rambling wonder of a place. With a multi-million-dollar facelift in the 1990s, the 174-room Equinox is better than ever, and again ready to welcome the best.

The Equinox has all the facilities of a luxury hotel, and then some: 18-hole golf course, heated swimming pool, five tennis courts, a health fitness center, lounge, restaurant, and Viennese-style bakery.

The Inn at Manchester, Route 7A (PO Box 41), Manchester, VT 05254 (tel 802-362-1793), on Route 7A between Manchester Village and Manchester Center, is a restored Vermont Victorian inn with plenty of room for guests in 16 rooms and suites in the inn, and four more in the restored carriagehouse, where there's a separate lounge.

The rooms bear the names of delightful mountain and meadow flowers, such as primrose, black-eyed Susan, and blue phlox.

Antiques are placed carefully in all the rooms, and each bedroom has a different style of coordinated linens and comforters. Old prints, paintings, and posters, picked up by innkeepers during their travels, are found on walls throughout the inn. The inn has a pool and offers wine and cheese to guests.
