Jutting southeast into the Atlantic Ocean and dividing Block Island Sound from Rhode Island Sound is Point Judith, part of the Town of Narragansett RI.

The peninsula of Narragansett's southern extremity (map) offers several things to travelers:

— The car and passenger ferry docks for ferryboats to Block Island, located at Port Galilee

Camping and picnic facilities at Fishermen's Memorial State Park, only 2 miles from Port Galilee

— Good sand beaches along the southern and eastern shores of the peninsula.

Port Galilee exists for the ferries to Block Island, the Roger W Wheeler State Beach, several small fisheries, and a Coast Guard station.

The Beach and the Ferry
First of all, be warned that Port Galilee has very few parking places on the street, and that these are usually taken up quickly by the people who work for the fishing companies.

Parking for Roger W Wheeler State Beach in official parking lots costs less for Rhode Island residents, more for out-of-state cars, but this includes the entry fee to the beach for everyone in your party, and is standard practice at all state beaches in Rhode Island.

Whether you park next to George's of Galilee Restaurant or at the large lots of the Wheeler Beach several hundred yards east, the rate and arrangement are the same.

For the ferry, parking fees are of the same order, and the lot is across the street and down a few yards from the ferry dock.

Note that the restaurants and motel in Galilee have parking lots, but they also put out fierce signs that threaten to have your car towed if your intention is other than patronizing their establishments.

It's best to take them at their word, especially if you're going away to Block Island for the day.
