Fort Adams State Park

The fort's defenses are some of the most impressive in the country—so impressive, in fact, that it rarely came under fire.

On a peninsula jutting into Newport harbor, Fort Adams State Park offers several attractions.

The fort itself, named after President John Adams, is open for guided tours from 11:30 am to 4:30 pm, Wednesday through Sunday in the summer (for a fee).

Boat-launching ramps, beach with lifeguard, picnic area, the Museum of Yachting, and soccer fields are among the services.

Views of the town and the harbor from hills in the park are well worth the short climb.

The park is open daily from 6 am to dusk all year, and picnic and fishing sites are open to all.
