Belcourt Castle | |
Of the mansions in Newport that do not belong to the Preservation Society, Belcourt Castle is the grandest. |

Another creation of Richard Morris Hunt, it was built in 1891. Oliver Belmont and his wife, formerly Mrs William Vanderbilt, had Hunt make them a castle in the style of Louis XIII (1610-43). Today the castle is filled with appropriate furnishings and memorabilia: stained glass, armor, silver, and carpets. It even boasts a golden coronation coach. Well-informed guides escort the visitor through the beautiful period rooms and explain the collection. Tea or coffee is then served.
