Belcourt Castle

Of the mansions in Newport that do not belong to the Preservation Society, Belcourt Castle is the grandest.

Another creation of Richard Morris Hunt, it was built in 1891.

Oliver Belmont and his wife, formerly Mrs William Vanderbilt, had Hunt make them a castle in the style of Louis XIII (1610-43).

Today the castle is filled with appropriate furnishings and memorabilia: stained glass, armor, silver, and carpets. It even boasts a golden coronation coach.

Well-informed guides escort the visitor through the beautiful period rooms and explain the collection. Tea or coffee is then served.
