My room, once the front parlor, had a high four-poster bed piled with snowy pillows and down comforter, antique furniture, walk-in closet, ceiling fan, modern bathroom with whirlpool tub-and-shower combination, and tall windows that flooded the room with light. The front porch is equipped with wicker rocking chairs, the back deck with tables and chairs for breakfasting in the morning sun, sipping tea in the afternoon, or a glass of wine in the evening. Various treats are set out during the day for guests to enjoy: tea and cakes in the afternoon, brownies in the evening. Mark Spring brings a wealth of experience in the art of hospitality from his years at the Ritz-Carlton Boston and Newport's own Cliffside Inn, and Dana Spring's family ran a much-loved inn on Nantucket Island for decades. They're the perfect low-key, thoughtful, helpful hosts. There's private off-street parking behind the inn. You can walk to Bellevue Avenue in a few minutes (although the mansions are quite a distance—it's a long street. The center of Newport is a pleasant 10-minute walk away. Marshall Slocum Guest House
