North Conway NH has taken well to its role of mountain town, and the people talk hearty and look healthy. The most prominent landmark in North Conway is the old railroad station, refurbished to host the Conway Scenic Railroad. You'll see it on the west side of the White Mountain Highway (NH Route 16/US 302; map), the town's main north-south street, just across the town green. The Mount Cranmore ski area is on the northeastern outskirts of the town. Other ski areas are nearby. Perhaps the character and charm of North Conway is best exhibited by the town library building on Main Street not far from the railroad station: though small, it's built of massive granite blocks and has a slate roof which will last forever. North Conway is not a particularly large town, although the mile or two of motels and restaurants along NH Route 16/US 302 south of town do seem to extend the boundaries. But basically you can walk to almost anything except this southern extension by parking downtown, somewhere near the town green and antique railroad station in the center. Some of the businesses are old-time mom-and-pop affairs, but a lot of shops have been citified to cater to the hiking and ski trades. Still, the town has not been "taken over" by city people.
