Mount Washington Hotel & Resort

The grand Mount Washington Hotel & Resort in Bretton Woods NH is famous for the Bretton Woods conference (1944) that established the world's monetary system.

It is a wonderful period piece in which fame, history, fine service and modern comfort all come together.

However, the 1900-acre (769-hectare) Mount Washington Hotel & Resort property was sold to new owners in 2006, and work is under way on a $1.1 billion plan to develop the resort into one similar to The Homestead resort in Hot Springs VA. The number of condominium units will be increased from 300 to 1400, starting with a 189-acre development at the base of the Bretton Woods ski slopes.

The development work, which may last until almost the year 2018, will change the character of the resort and lure up to 700,000 visitors annually to the resort.

The 170-room grand hotel was the site of the famous Bretton Woods conference of 1944 which established the world monetary system for the postwar period. Many of the room doors now bear brass plaques with the names of the dignitaries who stayed there during the conference.

Graceful old hotels of this sort, with their gracious service and accommodations, private golf courses, riding stables, clay tennis courts, indoor and outdoor pools, live nightly entertainment, playhouses, and the like, are still popular in many countries but rare in the USA, so it is heartening to see this one thriving.

The lobby is immense, with a baronial fireplace, huge pots of fresh flowers, and lots of color and activity. Nearby is a semicircular conservatory with a dome and many small stained-glass windows.

The views of the mountains and the grounds are very fine.

If you prefer a smaller place, The Bretton Arms, a smaller house on the property, has 34 rooms. Guests are granted access to the facilities at the Mount Washington Hotel.

The Lodge at Bretton Woods out on the highway (US 302) is associated with the hotel, and although the hotel currently operates only from late May to mid-October, the lodge stays open both summer and winter, hosting skiers in the cold months. Here the prices are for lodging only, but all privileges open to guests at the hotel are extended to guests at the lodge. Children stay free in their parents' room.
