Want to hike deep into the forest? You needn't carry a lot of camping gear. The Appalachian Mountain Club, the organization that has done so much to preserve and maintain wilderness trails in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, operates several lodging facilities in the White Mountain National Forest. At the AMC's Pinkham Notch Visitor Center south of Gorham NH, 11 miles (18 km) north of Jackson on NH 16 (map), people of all ages, whether AMC members or not, can find inexpensive bunkroom-type accommodations (106 bunks in all) and simple but hearty meals at the Joe Dodge Lodge. There's also the AMC Highland Center at Crawford Notch, with quite comfortable accommodations for singles, couples, and families, and plenty of outdoor activities. Besides these two centers, the AMC maintains a laudable system of mountain "huts" (simple hikers' lodges) along the Appalachian Trail in the mountains, with similar accommodations and payment terms. The huts are attended and trail meals prepared by "hutmen" and "hutwomen," a hearty breed of New England youth who pride themselves on being able to pack on their backs all the supplies needed in the huts—to a weight which would make a normal person stagger—and almost run up the mountains with the load several times a week. Guided hikes are featured by AMC naturalists throughout the summer. |
