During its boom years in the 1800s, Manchester NH was the textile capital of the world.

 

Manchester, New Hampshire's largest city, borders the Merrimack River. Cheap waterpower brought the city wealth in the textile boom of the mid- and late-19th century.

The Amoskeag Mills still border the river and the canals in the center of town, the brick façades stretching for almost a mile along its banks.

During their 19th-century heyday, Manchester's mills turned out more woven cloth than any other city in the world. Today Manchester's huge rambling brick mill buildings still stretch for over a mile along the banks of the Merrimack River, but they're filled with offices, shops, classrooms and high-tech innovation incubators.

There's a big Anheuser-Busch brewery south of the city which you can visit, and sample some of the Budweiser beer made here.
