Goose Rocks Beach, three miles east of Cape Porpoise in Kennebunkport ME, is great for kids because of the low surf. The wide, light sand beach is plenty big for the people who come, and the absence of surf, kept away by the reef and Timber Island, makes it safer and more pleasant for the little ones. at low tide you may be able to walk right out to Timber Island for a look around, but be sure to return to the mainland during low tide, unless you want to swim back. One of the reasons the beach is so spacious and uncrowded is that parking anywhere in the community of Goose Rocks Beach, including on the street right along the beach, is by permit only during the summer season from Memorial Day to Labor Day (late May through early September). The parking permit restriction keeps casual visitors away, but permits ($10 for non-residents for one day) are sold at the Kennebunkport Town Hall (tel 207-967-44243), 6 Elm St Kennebunkport, ME 04046-6155, and the Kennebunkport Police Department (tel 207-967-2454 or 207-967-8142), 101 Main Street, Kennebunkport, ME 04046 (24 hours a day, every day). The beach has toilets only, no other facilities. There is a grocery store within walking distance. If you want an uncrowded beach protected from surf, plan to take the trouble to buy a parking permit, preferably the day before you plan to go to Goose Rocks Beach. Plan to arrive early in the day if possible, because having a parking permit does not guarantee that you will find a parking place. On summer weekends, particularly in July and August, be sure to arrive as early as possible. Follow ME Route 9 (King's Highway) north and east from Kennebunkport and Cape Porpoise to Dyke Street and turn right, following the sign to Goose Rocks Beach.
