The Nantucket Visitor Center & Information Bureau is not far from Main Street and the ferry docks (map), and it's open from 9 am until the evening hours (usually 6 pm) during the summer (10 am to 4 pm on Sunday), shorter hours off-season. Here's a map (.pdf) of the main historic sights on Nantucket Island. The Visitor Center provides other maps of the island, brochure racks advertising local businesses, and same-day room reservations. If you arrive on the island without a place to stay, head for the Information Bureau as early as possible in the day. During the high summer season (July and August), don't expect miracles. You may find that the only rooms available are above your price range or below your expectations. Should you need medical care, they'll probably send you to the Nantucket Cottage Hospital, 57 Prospect Street at Vesper Lane (tel 508-825-8100)(map), a modern, accredited facility despite its cute name.
