NewEnglandTravelPlanner.com Logo   State Lobster Hatchery, Martha's Vd.

The Massachusetts State Lobster Hatchery and Research Station on Martha's Vineyard island is the oldest operating lobster hatchery in the world.

Here thousands of tiny lobsters are raised on pieces of shrimp meat to keep them from devouring one another until they are judged capable of fending for themselves in the chilly waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

The lobster hatchery is a fascinating stop for anyone interested in the life and times of New England's tastiest crustacean.

Admission is free, and it's open to visitors Monday through Friday from 1 to 3 pm.

The hatchery (tel 508-693-0060) is the outskirts of Vineyard Haven, on Shirley Road in the direction of Oak Bluffs (map).
