The Liberty Hotel's location gives you the liberty to get around Boston and Cambridge easily.

The Liberty Hotel is among Boston's most interesting places to stay, and not only because it is a handsome historic building (and National Historic Landmark): its location is unique (map).

You can walk to Beacon Hill, Boston Common, the Esplanade or Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). You can take the subway and in minutes you'll be at Boston Common, Downtown Crossing, South Station, the high-tech mecca of Kendall Square, or Harvard Square. You can take a taxi or car quickly anywhere else.

If you have business at Massachusetts General Hospital, it's a no-brainer (pardon my diagnosis...): the hotel is right next door to the world-famous medical complex.

And what a hotel! You won't mind being an "inmate" here. After five years and $150 million of preservation and modernization work finished late in 2007, the 1851 Suffolk County Jail, now the Liberty Hotel, is where people make an effort to get in, not to get out.

The soaring central space, now the lobby, with a restaurant-bar (CLINK) off to one side, retains its historic character from 1851, but 280 of the 300 guest rooms (of which 10 are suites) are in an ultra-modern 16-story tower, featuring private bars, imported bed linens, luxury bathrobes, flat-panel HD-LCD televisions, in-room safes, high-speed wireless Internet, VOIP telephones on a fully-converged digital network, and beautiful four-fixture bathrooms (ie, with bathtub, and separate shower stall), hair dryers, make-up mirrors, and environmentally-friendly personal care products.

The 18 guest rooms in the historic building are also modern in decoration and appointments, although certain features of the historic building have been preserved in them.

The suites and some of the guest rooms have views of the Charles River and its Esplanade, the Longfellow Bridge, and MIT and Cambridge on the opposite shore. Many of the views are simply spectacular!

The ground floor bar, called Alibii (natch) is located in the former jail's "drunk tank," where inebriated Bostonians were lodged to "sleep it off" overnight.

Lydia Shire's Scampo restaurant is on the ground floor where the paddy wagons used to enter, bringing new inmates. In summer, the restaurant expands outside to the beautiful garden courtyard between the historic and modern buildings.

Concierge service, valet parking, and a 24/7 health and fitness center with Koko Smartrainer are among the services. The Liberty Hotel is non-smoking throughout.
