From Hadlyme, drive northwest a few miles to East Haddam, where you'll find the wonderful old Goodspeed Opera House. |

East Haddam, on the east side of the Connecticut River, is famous for the historic Goodspeed Opera House and neighboring Gelson House inn and restaurant. It's a village noted for its music as well as musical drama. At the southern end of the town is Gillette Castle State Park, crowned by the weird and eerie castle-mansion built by famous Victorian actor-millionaire William Gillette. At the foot of the hill holding Gillette Castle, the historic Chester-Hadlyme ferry carries cars across the broad Connecticut River in the warmer months, as it has for centuries.
